This morning I took part in a conference call with three coaching colleagues. We ‘meet’ every month to compare notes, catch up, celebrate successes, whinge, challenge, learn from and support each other. One of my colleagues came up with a great metaphor for the process. She said it was as if the group were contained within a strong rubber band. Sometimes it felt as if you were being stretched out of your comfort zone. Equally, it was ok to stand still and simply support the others.
I think it’s a brilliant metaphor for the coaching relationship. At times, both the coach and the coachee will be stretched and challenged, but the relationship is contained within a strong, flexible and safe boundary.
