A friend of mine was in hospital a few weeks ago, feeling pretty grim. The consultant came to do the rounds. “Could you spare me a couple of minutes?” asked the consultant quietly.
The humility of his approach was impressive, I thought, and completely unlike the stereotypical image of the busy consultant who conveys through words and body language that patients are something of an irritation. I believe there is a lot to be learnt from his lack of ego and respectful communication style.
