Screen idols?

Standard

Please excuse the film-orientated slant to the blog over the past few days, but for some reason film-related thoughts keep bubbling up in my head.  This morning I heard an interview on Radio 4’s Today programme on the portrayal of women in movies as empty-headed shopaholics whose only desire is to attract a man and then, having ensnared him, to max out his credit card.

With a degree of guilt, I realised that a film on my list of favourites, Pretty Woman, was entirely in this mould.

I can’t think of many films off the top of my head which fall into the ‘entertaining’ or comedy category where the heroine is smart, witty and independent.   Help me out here – I’d be grateful if you could suggest any that prove me wrong.

You can hear the interview following the link below.
